This Prayer Guide for Universities is part of a series of posts. Be sure to catch all of them.

To See the Character of God

We are created in the image of God, with eternity in our hearts, and therefore we are made to create and to multiply influence, whether that influence is good or evil. Jesus promises that if we abide in Him we will produce lasting fruit, but we know He is speaking of the fruit of the kingdom of God. Human civilization without God is already reproducing in numbers and influence. Humanity has already produced fruit on the planet, the fruit of envy, jealousy, pride, and fear. Now with nearly eight billion people on the planet, human beings are spreading the influence of evil into every sphere of society. So we need to know the character of God in order to multiply the values of God’s kingdom.

We need those kingdom values to be worked into every aspect of our lives so that God’s kingdom becomes the standard and the template for everything we do. Jesus said, “Take my yoke upon you and learn of me, for I am meek and humble of heart” (Matt. 11:29). To learn from God, we must know and trust God’s character. We need to know more than just what He does; we need to know who He is. This requires humility. YWAM’s co-founder, Loren Cunningham, said “Intellectual humility is the basis for all learning. Until you’re willing to learn from the greatest intellect in the universe, you haven’t even started education.” It is the fruit of the Spirit, love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control (Gal. 5:22-23), which is God’s character, that He wants to fill every geographical place and every influential space on earth.

Therefore, it will not be by taking control of universities that kingdom values will be taught and preached as a testimony to the nations. Instead, it must be through servanthood, the example of the meekness and gentleness of Jesus, that the message makes a kingdom-style influence. When we know God’s character and we are growing in the fruit of the Spirit, we represent God’s kingdom. It is through God’s character that we shine the light of the gospel of the kingdom to influential spaces such as the universities.

On September 9, YWAM International has our monthly call to prayer. Read “The Invitation” to learn about this month’s focus, which is on students and universities internationally.
