God’s Light To See God’s Sons & Daughters of God
We focus ministry in a university setting and we pray for universities because God intends to saturate the earth with the glory of his kingdom. He has not finished, and He has not given us any different instructions. Therefore, we still have much to do. When Jesus hung on the cross, He said “It is finished” (John 19:30). When He returns to the earth, will He say, “That’s okay. I gave you instructions to do something, but I decided it wasn’t that important after all”? No, there will be “great voices in heaven saying, ‘The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever’” (Rev. 11:15).
For that announcement to take place, there must be a clear revelation to see God’s plan for us as His Sons and Daughters. Paul writes to the Romans, “For the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed” (Rom. 8:19). There is anticipation for something that does not yet exist.
The writer of the Book of Hebrews cites Psalm 8, “What is mankind that you are mindful of them, a son of man that you care for him? You made them a little lower than the angels, you crowned them with glory and honor and put everything under their feet.” In putting everything under them, God left nothing that is not subject to them. Yet at present we do not see everything subject to them. But we do see Jesus” (Heb. 2:6-9). Crowned with glory and honor and authority, but we do not see it yet. This requires God’s bright light to reveal all that God intends for us.
Do you have any doubt that with God we can accomplish the Great Commission? Do not misunderstand me; we cannot complete God’s Mission without him. Jesus said, “Apart from me, you can do nothing,” and “If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit” (John 15:5). Missionaries are too rarely sent to universities. Churches focus on missions, the planting of churches among the unreached, and that is appropriate. However, we must not neglect the fullness of God’s Mission, which includes a witness and influence in every sphere of society. For the Sons of God to be revealed, we must return to the depth and breadth of God’s Mission, which is to spread everywhere the aroma of Christ to bring the light of Christ into every arena.
This is more than cultural stewardship. This is not a mandate to re-create Christendom, the mistaken strategy of the Western Church. While true that the university thrived in the West within Christendom, it was not the product of Christendom. The university was founded for the purpose of God’s Mission, to bring God’s Light to the nations. When the modern university became more and more secularized, shedding it’s christian denominational traditions and curricula, many Christian leaders turned away from the task of stewarding culture and presenting truth in an environment that became hostile to the gospel. So they left the universities to start Bible Colleges, which had far less influence, and which allowed the festering of destructive philosophies to grow and spread into every sphere of society. The universities should never have been abandoned by the Church. The university is not only a place to share the gospel message to lost souls; it is a space for representing the character of God that will influence every sphere of society. The universities are like worship centers, where every kind of work is honored, and where the fields of study represent God’s nature as the original Communicator, Law Giver, Architect, Creator, Healer, Teacher, Counselor, and Father of all families. Lord, we pray for your glory to be revealed as your sons and daughters appear as your witnesses in universities around the world. “This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples” (John 15:8)
On September 9, YWAM International has our monthly call to prayer. Read “The Invitation” to learn about this month’s focus, which is on students and universities internationally.
