Anatomy of an Offense

“What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you?  You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures. (James 4:1-3)

I grew up with four brothers. We were best friends, but we had some pretty good fights too. The source of every fight was simple; one of us wanted something, and the other was in the way.

The first two brothers in the Bible were Cain and Abel. They had different gifts and callings. Cain worked the soil and Abel was a shepherd. Both brought offerings to God, the fruit of their labor. God preferred Abel’s offering, which was portions of fat from the firstborn lamb in his flock. Cain’s offering, for some reason, was accepted, but not favored by God. And Cain got angry.

Amazingly, God met with Cain to tell him he had a choice to do right and find God’s favor or allow sin to rule. Cain did not make the right choice. He murdered his brother. The very first murder on planet earth did not happen over gold or sex or love; The first murder occurred as a result of different experiences in worship.

We are worshipping beings at our core. We make offerings to our Creator, but our motives for doing so will reveal something about our true heart. God knows our hearts; he knows our true motive. This is the first step to getting beyond division; we must examine our hearts.
