Ocean City is a barrier island family resort community, not immediately recognized as a community where poor people reside. This community was founded 140 years ago. It was dedicated in prayer as a Christian retreat by four Methodist ministers, providing a place for rest and revival for people from the cities. Today the city is still an alcohol-free town and America's favorite family resort. It has a population of about ten thousand year-round residents, which expands to over 100,000 with vacationers during the summer months. This community is a shore community where dress is very casual. However, our offices are in a business building where casual dress is appropriate everyday. There are plenty of spaces to go to when you need a change of pace. Local coffeehouses, the OC Library, or work from your home. Internship assignments will be with local ministries and organizations.
YWAM Converge in Ocean City is a local expression of an international missions movement called Youth With A Mission. YWAM involves Evangelism, Training (to prepare people to fulfill their unique calling from God), and Mercy Ministries (helping the poor and those who suffer injustice). MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN YOUR WORLD! We connect interns to missional organizations. We do that through Converge, a single platform with a searchable registry of internship & outreach opportunities, an online learning course, and a social fundraising platform to help students make a real-world difference with their field of studies, their skills, and their passions. YWAM Ocean City's Converge Office is located in Ocean City's downtown neighborhood, surrounded by great dining and shopping, the boardwalk, the bay, and the beach. We have convenient access to public transportation and Ocean City is a great place to ride bikes.
While many residents are affluent, and many of the houses are second homes of nonresidents, there are many others in this community and the surrounding communities, including Atlantic City where thousands have recently lost their jobs. Many of those local residents are seeking work, and many others have been trapped in various levels of poverty.
Internship fees cover room, board, and required local travel expenses. Additional costs include personal travel to and from Ocean City, NJ from the intern's home, and any international visa fees, and any personal expenses (e.g., toiletries, phone plans, laundry, internet data, etc.).
Interns will live in a homestay with YWAM leaders John & Mary Henry. However, when necessary interns will live in a shared apartment with a common living room area, kitchen, and dining area. We set expectations, promote conversations around the dinner table and during work hours. We reinforce values, including keeping a very tidy living quarters.
